Composed landscapes lend themselves to yet another sort of
study. I apply successive layers of paint, correct their values,
add in and take out some elements: this is the way my study
passes off and how I describe real pleasure in imagining or
drawing sketches from memory to achieve an art work. Therefore
I first practice on my palette for a long time before actually
going live. Then I apply tones until I find the ideal mix of
colours, the one that will grant subtlety to the painting. I
may succeed in it by juxtaposing colours one after the other.
